Today, Thursday, August 29th, at 5:00 PM, Kelly, along with her playing partner Jean Paul Montanus, played their first match in themixed class 17.
This is the first time (mixed) doubles are included in the Paralympic program, but Kelly and JP have a relatively high handicap and are competing against opponents who are more mobile. Another new aspect is that the matches are played in a “knockout” system, meaning that after a loss, you’re out of the tournament. Kelly and JP are using the mixed event as a warm-up for the singles matches that begin next week.
The first match against the German pair, Björn Schnake and Stephie Grebe, who have a similar handicap, went exceptionally well. With game scores of 11-2, 11-4, and 11-3, it was a very quick win. At 8:00 PM, things will be different, as they will be playing against the multiple Paralympic champions from China.
Finally, the distances are vast, even within the table tennis complex. Therefore, Kelly rides around on a small children’s bicycle to conserve her energy, which is quite a sight.
On to the next match!
