Today, Kelly van Zon secured victory at the Dutch Open Para Table Tennis. In Stadskanaal, the reigning Paralympic champion proved too strong for Chinese player Rui Wang in the final.
Van Zon stated, “Of course, it’s really enjoyable to play here in the Netherlands. There are quite a few top players participating in all categories. It’s finally worked out for me to avoid facing the Turkish player Korkut in a tournament. Not that I want to avoid anyone, but I almost always compete against her on the international stage. I had a very pleasant tournament. Korkut lost to the Asian champion, and I defeated her twice in this tournament.”
In the final, Van Zon dominated Wang with three sets of 11-8 each. “Since I’m already qualified, I can now plan my path to the Tokyo Paralympic Games. I have one more tournament in Costa Rica this year, where I’ll face the Mexican and the (continental) American champions.”
She concluded by saying, “What I hear from all the players is that the tournament is well-organized. I want to thank the association, Pagedal, the volunteers, and everyone involved in making this tournament possible!”
